Check DSL, Cable or Dial-Up modem for proper settings
and Security Best Practices
Many Cable or DSL
modems provide you with an "always-on"
connection to the public internet but offer little or nothing in the way of an
integrated firewall. Older modems
especially may be entirely dependent on a
properly configured software
firewall installed on your PC for any protection
against attacks.
We will check if any upgrades are available
for your modem to provide additional security
features or correct any vulnerabilities. (Some
feature upgrades may require purchase of an
upgrade kit or a software unlock key from the
manufacturer and are not covered by this special
pricing.)
We will check whether your modem model is using
the most recent firmware that is compatible with
your internet service provider. If an
appropriate firmware upgrade is available for
download at no charge from the manufacture, we
will install it. (Some manufacturers may
charge for their firmware upgrades, in which
case we will discuss with you the pros and cons
of purchasing the upgrade.)
We
will attempt to configure the modem to
incorporate as many security best practices as
it is capable of supporting (a process known as
"hardening"), and will advise you if we believe
that continued use of that particular modem
poses an unacceptably high security risk to your
company.
We will verify that the software firewall
settings on your desktop systems are providing a
second layer of protection against both external
attacks and attacks that could be launched from
other computers on your internal network.
Recent Cable or DSL Modems may contain an
integrated switch (2 to 4 ports) and
router/firewall. An incorrectly configured
firewall, or one that is still using factory
default settings that are well known to hackers,
will only provide a false sense of security.
We will check if any upgrades are available
for your modem to provide additional security
features or correct any vulnerabilities. (Some
feature upgrades may require purchase of an
upgrade kit or a software unlock key from the
manufacturer and are not covered by this special

We will verify that a firewall or router
integrated into your Cable or DSL modem is
configured to provide adequate protection
against external attacks.
If you are using an analog Dial-Up Modem (or an
ISDN Terminal Adapter) for your internet
connection, we will check the dialer settings to
verify that it is dialing a valid local access
number for your ISP and has not been
redirected
to a 900- or long-distance number as a result of
malicious software.
We will perform the same check if you have an
internal modem for sending/receiving FAX
messages but use a Cable or DSL Modem for your
internet connectivity.
We
will check whether your dial-up modem is using
the most recent firmware that is compatible
with your internet service provider. If an
appropriate firmware upgrade is available for
download at no charge from the manufacture, we
will install it. (Some manufacturers may
charge for their firmware upgrades, in which

We will test and report the upload/download
throughput (speed) of your internet connection
for Cable, DSL or Dial-Up.
